Tuesday Tunes Music session - 31st July 2018

Present:

Katherine of Glastonbury, harp
Elyna Delynor, alto rebec & lever harp
Emily of Ildhafn, soprano recorder
Emrys Twdr, violin & viola

Tunes played:

- If Ye Love Me (Thomas Tallis)
From the Snogbook, pages 34 & 35.
This session we had Emily on soprano, Elyna playing alto on the rebec, Emrys on tenor, and Katherine bringing up the bass. I had previously told people to learn up to the double bar lines, i.e. the first half, so we worked on putting that part together. We used a metronome to maintain the timing which was very successful!

We then looked at the second half and despite not having practiced it much we made good progress getting it to fit together, also with the use of a metronome (from memory around 35 bpm for a training speed?). Next time we will keep working on this as it was making encouraging progress.

***NOTE: Anybody who is not able to make the group sessions but wants to be involved in these musical endeavours please email me - we can talk about how we can fit things together remotely!

 - Dona Nobis Pacem
Version used is on page 29 of the Snogbook. Katherine and Emrys teamed up as a group and Emily and Elyna went it alone.

For clarity, we achieve canon by each of the three groups repeating the first passage an increasing number of times, once, twice, and three times, before continuing through the piece. Once your group has played three times through, repeat the last passage until everyone is done. We chose this as I understand it to be the familar way for many singers.

- Scottish Bransle
For those playing by ear, this starts on a G and has a Bb. Played 4 times.

Washerwoman's Bransle
This starts on a G and has a Bb. Played 4 times.

- Cassandra Bransle
Starts on C. By Arbeau this isn't written with any 'key signature' but does have the last B in the tune written as flattened. Harps therefore leave out the (only) other B in the tune, which recorders and dulcimer etc play as B natural. Played 4 times.

** Tuesday 7th August is a PRACTICE AT HOME session. Next group session scheduled for 14th August **

Future group music sessions will take place on Tuesdays ONCE A FORTNIGHT.
