Music session - 5th December 2017

Present:

Katherine of Glastonbury, harp
Elyna Delynor, lever harp
Emily of Ildhafn, soprano recorder
Sympkyn of the Moor, hammered dulcimer
William de Cameron, recorders

Tunes played:

- Pinagay Bransle
This chap starts on a G and has F# in the melody. We've recently noticed that although we are used to playing it through without repeats, the recorded music that we sometimes dance to has the B part repeated. No doubt this is optional, but we thought we would do the same just to see how we liked it.

- Charlotte Bransle
This is still new to most of us and we're still at the going slow through the tune in chunks stage. Many of us are trying to learn it by ear. It's getting there but still hard work. Starts on G and has a Bb, and as mentioned before we play the high E near the end of the melody as a natural (not flattened as sometimes opted for).

- Cassandra Bransle
At the learning stage as Charlotte above. Starts on C.

After this, new stuff was making our tired brains hurt so we went back to familiar ground:
- Ballo Del Fiore
Starts on a G and has a Bb.

- Scots Bransle
This starts on a G and has a Bb. We are choosing to play it where Arbeau wrote it down. A lot of arrangements have it starting on A. Doesn't hurt to learn it in both pitches.

- Washerwoman's Bransle
Same as for Scots Bransle.

Finally:
- Cantiga 119
Thought we'd see how fast we could go just for the fun of it. As with all the Cantigas De Santa Maria, there is no indication of tempo written down with the songs, so I presume it's all about interpretation. Sometimes I feel they should be leisurely. Today it was Blitzkrieg Bop speed.

END OF YEAR NOTES:
There have been gaps in the programme due to St Cath's and investiture, and as the year draws to a close many of us are lacking in energy levels. Next week there is a Tuesday Tunes session scheduled on the 12th, and at this stage the week after also on the 19th. However I will send the usual email out to gauge numbers and if people are flagging then we may wrap things up early.

The Baronial BBQ is at our house on Saturday the 16th and people are welcome to bring instruments if they wish! Email if you need more details - Sympkyn has emailed the list already :)

**Reminder**
Future music sessions will take place on Tuesdays rather than Mondays. NEW VENUE! (email me omusic@ildhafn.lochac.sca.org for address), same time (7.30pm - 9.30pm).
Newcomers are very welcome :)
Regards,
