Collegium

Date and Time:
Saturday, April 16, 2016 - 09:30 to 16:30

We're going to have a Collegium, which will include an assortment of classes on various crafts, and other things of interest. It's an ungarbed event, so just come in your normal clothing. This is a fantastic event to come along to as a first event, as you don't need any garb and there's a good selection of some of the stuff that we like to do to introduce you to it in a relaxed setting.

Bookings are now closed.

There will be a total of 10 classes run on the day, in two streams - so you will be able to attend five of the ten classes on offer.

Lunch is included in the booking cost.

Cost: $13.50

If you are new to the group, my SCA name is Vettoria di Giovanni da Verona, and I'll be stewarding (organising) the event. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at collegiumsteward@ildhafn.lochac.sca.org

Class Descriptions

Behaving Badly in the Renaissance - a Practical Class - presented by Katherina Weyssin

A practical class teaching you how to perform all those actions that dance and etiquette manuals tell you not to do. You're likely to learn something about renaissance etiquette, from period sources, and probably giggle a lot.

An Introduction to Secular Medieval Music - presented by Ludwig von Regensburg

Thanks to the development of notation, a wealth of music survives from medieval Europe.  I will discuss a few examples, along with comments on their origin, purpose, transmission and performance.

Cassoni - An Introduction to Italian Marriage Chests - presented by Vettoria di Giovanni da Verona

Cassoni, or marriage chests, from Renaissance Italy survive in large numbers and are extremely well documented. Via a slideshow, we'll explore their stylistic evolution over several hundred years, and some of the cultural background to them as well, especially some of the dodgier details.

Buttonholes and Eyelets - presented by Llewelyn ap Dafydd

An introduction to how to easily and efficiently hand sew buttonholes and eyelets, to give your clothing a clean and finished look.

Tarim stitch Nal Binding - presented by Ginevra di Serafino Visconti

Tarim stitch is one of the first examples of Nalbinding we have, and is the one often confused with knitting. This class will cover the origins of the stitch, the things it was used to create, and give people a chance to learn the basics while starting on a hat.  Instructions will be provided to finish it.

Please note: this class is limited in size, so please include a note that you'd like to attend on your booking form, and/or email the steward to secure your place!

Brick Stitch - presented by Eleanor Hall

A practical class on German brick stitch embroidery - more information to follow.

Please note: this class is limited in size, so please include a note that you'd like to attend on your booking form, and/or email the steward to secure your place!

Making your knit hose fancier - presented by Ginevra di Serafino Visconti

There are a number of ways of making your knit hose fancier, and sometimes easier or more interesting to knit, before you get to the level of Eleanor of Toledo.  Discuss some of the simpler ways, including fancy seams and gussets, stars, and clocks. Having some knitting experience would be useful, but not essential.

Patterning and making shoes using a simple board & wedge last - presented by William de Wyke

This class shows how anyone with minimal woodworking skills and access to 19mm pine planks at the hardware store can make a last that simplifies the patterning and making of medieval shoes.

This will be a demonstration class due to time constraints but I am happy to do practical workshops after the collegium for anyone who is interested.

Breaking down the Spanish tailoring manuals: secret codes unlocked - presented by Willemyne van Nymegen

Secret codes unlocked! Repeating patterns found! The Tailor manuals are by now understood not to be patterns as we know them today, in fact they are and were used in much the way the small cutting diagrams on modern patterns are used today. However this is not all they offer.

This class will be a quick run through the four books currently available. I will concentrate mainly on the women's section- simply due to the small number of patterns. However much of what I will talk about will help with understanding other garments.

Share your coolest books - presented by Catalina OroSol

Have you got an interesting book on an arcane subject lurking in your personal library? Or maybe you've got something on a topic everyone wants to know about. Here's your chance to show it off and introduce it to people! BYO cool book to share, or find out what other people have in their stash that you might be interested in.
