North Shore newcomers day - 5th August

Date and Time:
Saturday, August 5, 2023 - 10:00 to 16:00

Come and meet the SCA!

Where: Northcote War Memorial Town Hall, 2 Rodney Road, Northcote

When: Saturday 5th August 10am-4pm

Entry: Gold coin donation if you wish, to cover the cost of hall hire

This is a chance for anyone who's curious to come along and see what we do. We'll have a variety of our arts and sciences and martial arts on display, including fencing, dancing, music and singing, calligraphy and illumination, painting, costume making, and more!

The day will be run in two parts - ongoing activities, and displays or classes at set times:

  1. Throughout the day there will be people doing or showing things like making garb, music, archery, martial arts, calligraphy and painting. They'd love to chat to you about what they're doing. And if you have something fun you'd like to bring along and show potential new people - please do!

  2. And then we'll be running these displays and classes:
  • 11am - Dance display and a class focusing on dances for beginners.

  • 12pm - Renaissance Fencing combat display and ‘Have a Go’ Class - have you always loved the Princess Bride? Come along and find out more about the fencing masters mentioned in the fight at the top of the Cliffs of Insanity - from Bonetti to Cappo Ferro, Thiabult to Agrippa, this class is perfect for those who have never held a sword before or are experienced and just want to broaden their understanding!

  • 1pm - Music and singing - come hear our musicians and learn a few songs!

  • 2pm - Combat display and show and tell.

This is an ungarbed event, so there is no need to wear period clothing if you don't want to, but you may if you wish!

Unfortunately the hall hire conditions prevent us from serving food on site. However, there's a cafe and takeaways across the road. And both the Northcote and Highbury shops are a short drive away.

Directions:

If you're driving from the south, take the first motorway exit after the bridge - Stafford Rd.

If you're catching a bus, take any of the 95 or 97 buses and walk 600m from Onewa Road at Bruce St, stop no. 4086. These buses both stop at Victoria Park which may make a convenient transfer point. Plan your journey with the AT Journey Planner.
