Singing: plans for 2014

Submitted by Katherina Weyssin on February 2, 2014 - 4:33pm

For 2014, Katherina's singing classes have moved from A&S Sundays to Wednesday evenings. Christine is also running singing on Sundays. This post is about what Katherina has planned for Wednesday nights.

Format

Classes will be a little more focussed than previously. I'll be primarily aiming to cater to "regulars". Intermittent attendance is fine (very welcome, in fact!), but you'll need to do some catching up by yourself, or perhaps bow out of some songs: I won't necessarily repeat previously-taught material indefinitely. I will continue to publish what we do every week here, and make teaching-aids available online, so it should be easy to keep track of what we're up to, even if you're not coming every week.

Repertoire

Here's what I'm hoping to cover in 2014.

Part Songs

Start with these, in Autumn:

  • La Sirena / La Caccia
  • Laudate Deum Domine
  • La la la, Je ne l'ose dire

Moving on to these, in Spring, or when the first set are solid:

  • La Tricotea
  • Coventry Carol (3-part version)
  • Vitrum nostrum gloriosum

Warmup rounds

  • Laudemus Virginem
  • Splendens ceptigera
  • something else, probably in English

Rounds to challenge us

  • O virgo splendens
  • Ah, comme c'est chose belle

Songs for working (and waiting in lines)

These are things I aim to have memorised, so we can sing them in lunch-queues, while we wash dishes, and while we sew hems. "Margot", and many of our rounds, also fall into this category.

  • C'est la fins
  • Stella splendens
  • ?

Old repertoire

Most of the list above is new material for us. I'd like to retire most of last-year's repertoire: they're lovely songs, so I want to move on before we become bored with them. From time to time we'll have an "open night" where we sing all our old favourites, by request, just as we do sometimes at events.

Songs to refresh occasionally this year:

  • As I me walked (4 verses)
  • Gush forth my tears
  • O my heart
  • Alle psallite
  • Verbum caro factum est

Songs to put aside for now:

  • Il bianco et dolce cigno
  • As I me walked (1 verse)
  • Jubilate Deo
  • Lady come down and see
  • Dona nobis
  • Contrapunto bestiale alla mente

Schedule

First lesson on Wednesday the 19th of February.

Lessons thereafter will be in blocks of about 5 weeks: 4 weeks to work on new material, then one "open session" where we sing whatever we feel like, by request (including old favourites and things we've put aside for the time being, as well as our new stuff).

There will be a short break in May, and a longer break in June/July: dates TBA.

After that, we'll resume singing as usual for the latter part of the year, finishing in late November or early December.
