Wednesday Night: songs for three voices

Wednesday the 19th - what we did

Laudemus Virginem

Splendens Ceptigera

This round is also from the Llibre Vermell (same source as Laudemus, above).

The copy we're using is copyright. I'll source (or produce) a copyright free version for the website at some point.

Gush forth my tears

Focus on dynamics, coming on well.

Alle psallite

Several nice runs through, with good dynamics and lovely tuning: our fifths and octaves are getting purer.

We returned to it at the end, and inadvertently started a tone higher than written (instead of our usual 3rd-5th lower). Vettoria and Katherina struggled a bit with the Gs, but managed them: congratulations all round.

We're continuing to enjoy this at everything from moderate to ramming speed, and at a range of pitches. A constant is that the upper lines emphasise the phrases where they have words, and pull back a little on the "ah"s. That gives a pleasing back-and-forth interaction between the upper parts, and allows both words and harmony to appear cleanly.

Change then for lo she changeth

An impromptu decision to try this turned out surprisingly well. Thanks, William and Vettoria!

As usual, the first section was easy, and bars 11 and 12 were difficult. Nevertheless, the piece came together quickly, and we all liked it. Next time, we'll clean up the rhythm on the trickier bars. It's a little high for Katherina, so do it when we're well warmed-up, but not yet tired.

Plans for next time

  • Gush forth - continued work on dynamics
  • Change then for lo she changeth - get parts solid, esp bars 11 and 12
  • La tricotea - make a start?

Other ideas for this track: Ah Robin, some Adam de la Halle stuff, 15thC Spanish (Quien de traxo?), Agincourt Carol, Coventry Carol
